I travel a lot, and recently came up with a little game to make flights more interesting. As soon as my seat mate starts making conversation, I see how soon I can fit this one sentence into the conversation. The line is, "I could take you."

It works best if they accidentally bump my elbow or kick my purse, and then apologize so I can respond with a special "look" for impact. It has to be done just right and kind of simultaneously, like this:

HIM: Oops, I'm sorry, did I just bump your arm?

ME: (with a side-eye, like I'm giving his physique a once over and find it less than threatening) You know, I could take you.

Just like that, totally blasé. Then I either go back to reading my book or follow up with, "so, don't mess with me, buddy," again, very blasé.

Thus far, all reactions have been positive, laughter and the like, but always with a couple seconds of bewilderment, as in, did I just hear her right?

I fly first class, so 9 times out of 10 I'm next to a businessman in his 50s or 60s, the exact type of gent that makes up my client base. They're fun to mess with because I adore them. They're just being respectful, when all of a sudden, for some crazy reason, this pretty, quiet, 120 pound, female bookworm, makes it clear she could kick their butt down the aisle of a 737 at 30,000 feet.

I've ended up having great conversations with lovely gents from this little ice breaker, but if I really want to read and they won't shut up, I do actually kick their butts down the aisle and into coach.

I'm kidding, but I could...I could definitely take 'em.
